At its peak, the 19th century mining town of Golden, now a ghost town, was home to 100 people and served as a hub for many others who worked the land in more remote locations. The 1850s mining camp eventually gave way to a town established around 1890. Golden was distinguished by its lack of saloons in the town center, its two active churches and the large orchard established by its founding families. Today, visitors can explore the remaining settlements perched above the valley where miners once toiled.
Golden's remains include four buildings: a church, a former residence, a shed and a structure that once housed a post office and store. The entire property is in the National Register of Historic Places.

This beautiful day-use park is located on the banks of the Rogue River and at the foot of geologically prominent Table Rock. You can picnic, fish, launch your boat, swim and hike on a 2-mile trail. Denman Wildlife Refuge, next to the park, teems with local and migratory birds. Salmon and steelhead pass through seasonally on treks to and from the ocean.

Built along the Applegate Trail in 1883 for a local entrepreneur named Henry Smith, Wolf Creek Inn is the
oldest continuously operating inn in the Pacific Northwest. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places,
the Inn retains its classical revival architecture and early 20th century decor. Today remnants of the original
orchards can still be found there. In addition, many famous actors such as Clark Gable, Carole Lombard, and
Orson Wells would often seek retreat at the Inn

Heading to or from the Oregon coast or the giant redwoods on Hwy. 199, you may want to stop for a picnic at this lovely day-use park. Located at the confluence of the east and west forks of the Illinois River, the park offers picnic tables and restrooms (vault toilet). There is a short walking trail near the picnic area and a 9-hole disc golf course. The Illinois Valley is a unique geologic area with many rare plants.
