Have you ever wanted to... teach others about native flora, wildlife, geology, local history, astronomy, fishing, or outdoor skills? Have the Central Oregon High Desert as your classroom? Would you like the challenge of including children and adults in your programs? You can do all these things as an Interpretive Host at The Cove Palisades State Park, in the Deschutes campground and day uses. This is a fun and rewarding opportunity in a breathtaking location. As an interpretive host you will be an important part of hundreds of family's summer vacation memories. Just to name a few resources to inspire your creative energy... the Cascade Mountain Range, Lake Billy Chinook, a rich and interesting local history that includes The Confederated Tribes of warm Springs, railroad barons, pioneers, homesteaders, farmers, fisherman, boaters and more.  There are a variety of wildlife from bats to cougars, birds of prey and the unusual striped plateau whip-tailed lizard, and a vast dark night sky filled with billions of stars, planets, galaxies and of course the full moon. Memorial Day Weekend, State Parks Day/Festival of The Land event, 4th of July weekend, Halloween in August event and Labor Day weekend are extra fun events here in the park with campground parades, family fun games and campfire programs. 

Additional duties may include - LANDSCAPE, including tree limb removal, pruning, raking, weeding, mowing, mulching and trimming, blowing walkways, moving hoses, watering, etc. MAINTENANCE, including cleaning, trash removal, sweeping, restocking for restrooms.  Woodworking and painting interpretive props.

Located in the heart of central Oregon and encompassing the Deschutes and Crooked River canyons, The Cove Palisades State Park is a popular year-round destination for camping and water sports. The park offers two seasonal campgrounds. Deschutes River Campground is located in the canyon down the road from two swimming and boating areas along the Lower Deschutes River arm of Lake Billy Chinook. High above the canyon near the park entrance is the Crooked River Campground.


The Maintenance Host provides service for The Cove Palisades State Park by supporting landscaping, general repair, special maintenance projects, and maintenance shop upkeep. Review the volunteer assignment description for this position here.


Time Commitment: Volunteers should anticipate 4-5 hours per person per day, 5 days/week, performed between the hours of 9:00am and 3:00pm. Minimum commitment of 20 hours per week.
