Minam State Recreation Area is located in the picturesque canyons of scenic Wallowa County. Visitors to this area regularly enjoy fishing, rafting, and wildlife viewing along the Wild and Scenic Wallowa River. Following the gravel road north from the highway exit, more than two miles of river access can be found before the road ends at the quiet 22-site campground. Wildlife in the area include rattlesnakes, deer, elk, bear, cougar, eagles, resident blue herons, and occasional wayward cows. Minam State Recreation Area makes the most of the Wallowa River, attracting anglers, boaters, rafters and those seeking solitude and simplicity. Located between the Wallowa Whitman and Umatilla national forests, the campground is gateway to miles of hiking trails
The Minam maintenance host provides landscaping, campground upkeep, stocking firewood, stocking restrooms
with paper products, performs general repair and assists ranger on duty with special maintenance projects, opens and closes visitor center, and interacts with visitors in a welcoming and professional manner. For interested hosts, there are opportunities to engage in interpretive duties at the visitor center.
Note: Hosts are required to drive park vehicles to access dispersed areas within the Minam State Recreation Area and nearby picnic areas. Review the volunteer assignment description for this position here.
Time Commitment: Volunteers should anticipate a 5-day schedule with the expectation of 20-30 hours per
week. Days off are communicated through the monthly schedule. Campground duties are between the hours of 9am-4pm, visitor center doors are open between the hours of 9am - 8pm and wood sales are on the honor system.
